1. Hindi is an Indo-European language

Hindi Translation Service is a standardised form of Hindustani, along with Urdu. Hindi is derived directly from Hindustani in North India and was standardised in the 19th century. Hindi and Urdu share significant similarities, and they are still linguistically considered to be two variants of Hindustani.

Hindi is mostly influenced by Sanskrit language, which dates back to nearly 5,000 BC. It owes its origin to the Indo-Aryan branch of the Indo-European language group. The word “Hindi” came from the Persian word “Hind”, which means the “Land of the Indus River.” The river falls into Pakistan after passing through Tibet and northernmost part of India.

Hindi was called by different names at different stages of its evolution in different eras. Hindi was known as Apabhramsa (Sanskrit; Corruption or corrupted speech), at its earliest stage.

Kalidas, a renowned Sanskrit scholar and literary playwright in ancient India, composed a romantic play titled “Vikramorvashiyam” in Apabhramsa in 400 AD.

2. Hindi is spoken by 490 million people across the world

5. English has borrowed a great number of words from Hindi

Examples of Hindi loanwords include avatar, bandanna, bungalow, guru, jungle, khaki, karma, loot, mantra, nirvana, punch, pyjamas, sorbet, shampoo, thug, typhoon and yoga.

6. Hindi Divas

India's Hindi-speaking regions celebrate Hindi Day annually on 14th September. Hindi Day commemorates the adoption of Hindi as an official language by the Indian Constituent Assembly in 1965.
